The sky on the other side of these immense windows is deciding what it wants to do—the rain finally arrived, but the thunder and lightning left a while ago, likely figuring its job was done here. I will never get over how incredibly beautiful this place is. And tomorrow, before I leave, I’m going down to put my toe in that water, even if it freezes off.

The ballroom door opens and closes behind me, but I’m too enraptured by the view ahead, too warm from the pink drink in my hand to pay much attention.

“Is this seat taken?”

Sam. With our cameras.

“Mariah said you were still out here sipping some liquid courage.”

“Yeah, she’s cunning. Ordered the cosmo for herself and then forced it into my hands.”

“That little old thing?” Sam smiles and sits. “I believe every word.”

He faces the window, crosses his ankles, and breathes deeply. “This place is unreal.”

“Yeah … it kills me that there’s all this beauty, and yet the idiots in there are treating it like their personal mosh pit.”

“Rich people, am I right?” Sam eyes the now-empty glass in my hand. “You hungry?”

My stomach growls on cue. “I could eat. But”—I nod toward the ballroom—“not in there.”

Sam stands, loops his camera over his neck, and offers his bent elbow. “Mademoiselle, allow me to escort you into Revelation Cove’s fine-dining area.”

“Why, thank you, sir. How very gallant.” I hand Sam my glass, grab my own camera, and take his arm. The dining room still has tables available—with the bride’s side of the wedding party living it up in the ballroom, the groom’s family and friends are in here, gathered in a markedly more somber affair.

I spot Rob and his mom in the corner. He offers me a tired smile when we make eye contact—yeah, he looks terrible. Which is to be expected.

“I should probably go say hi to Rob’s mom.”

“After we eat, Frankie. This isn’t your disaster to fix,” Sam says, pulling out my chair for me. That he’s chosen the chair that puts my back to Rob may be strategic. Either way, I’m glad.

As we’re sitting, my phone buzzes in my pocket. “It’s Gabe,” I say, reading the screen. “He and Lainie are at the studio and he can’t find—I don’t even know what he can’t find because his spelling is so terrible. I should call him—”

Sam takes my phone and places it facedown out of my reach. “Your brother and your father are grown-ups. You’ve been taking care of their crap all weekend. They can find whatever they need right this second without you.”

“It’s just that I know the studio like the back of my hand, so they always rely on me to help out.”

“Yeah, they do. And tonight, they can help themselves.”

Sam’s got a point, but I worry that Gabe might actually need something, and if he’s at the office, on a Saturday—shouldn’t he be at home resting? He just had surgery! What could be so important that he’s there now? “Maybe I should call him.
